Shapes Activity for Kids
We decided on 4 different shapes to use but you can use any many as you would like.
We chose a circle, square, triangle, and a star. I took a separate piece of paper for each shape and wrote the name and then drew the shape at the top.
Then dip your shapes in paint and match the correct shape to each paper.
I asked her what each shape was as she made an imprint. She knew what a star and circle were previously but a square and triangle were new to her.
To expand vocabulary and the understanding of shapes, I described what each shape looks like and what characteristics they have in common, or don’t have in common, with other shapes.
For instance we talked about how circles have no corners but how squares have 4 corners.
For more learning you could have them make patterns- this is a great pre-math skill.
Next we took a large paper and she made a shape collage.
This is one of those simple activities that is so easy to put through together but is still fun and educational. It is a great activity to teach toddlers and preschoolers about shapes and colors in a fun hands-on way.
